WI: St. Mary's Medical Center to Ban Smoking Campus Wide [08/13-3]
Excerpts from: No Butts at St. Mary's
WMTV [08/13/04]
It's lights out at St. Mary's Hospital, as the Madison medical center begins the process of implementing a campus wide tobacco free policy.
Currently St. Mary's has designated smoking areas outside for employees, patients and visitors. But starting November first, ash trays will be removed from those areas and by November 18th, the day of the Great American Smokeout, smoking will no longer be permitted on campus.
"We understand that implementing this smoke free campus may cause concern or inconvenience for some of those we serve or their family members," says Dr. Frank Byrne, President of St. Mary's Hopital, "and we are committed to working with them to assist them through this process.""Patients out here smoking that really need to have a cigarette, and I also see the need as a healthcare provider to help encourage people to have a healthier lifestyle, so there are two sides to the story," emergency room nurse Lynn Larsen tells NBC 15 News. The policy affects St. Mary's along with 19 other hospitals that make up SSM health care, including St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo.
St. Mary's is looking for feedback from the community before the tobacco free policy begins. So if you have questions or comments you can call 258–5757. You can remain anonymous, or if you want to be called back, you can leave your number.
