IMPORTANT INFO RE 10TH WORLD CONFERENCE [8.21.2]
Here is the Official Press Release and Schedule

**********

PRESS RELEASE: 6 August 1997

Nearly 1,500 of the world's experts on smoking and tobacco control meet in Beijing from 24-28 August for the 10th World Conference on Tobacco or Health.

New unpublished figures, spelling out the current toll of death and illness wrought by tobacco worldwide and the catastrophic scale of the epidemic still to come, will be revealed to delegates from China and 76 other nations and regions across the world.

The triennial conference marks 30 years of the tobacco control movement and is the first to be held in a developing Asian country. The choice of Beijing was an acknowledgement both of the enormity of the tobacco problem in that country and the ongoing efforts by China to combat the ever-increasing threat from tobacco company expansion. One in three of all cigarettes smoked in the world today are smoked in China.

Tobacco: the growing epidemic is the major theme, but with nearly one hundred presentations in the plenary and symposium sessions alone, the conference will cover tobacco issues from every continent and viewpoint. Topics include: litigation, legislation, tobacco promotion, world trade and smuggling, addiction and cessation, youth, school and families, passive smoking, occupational health, tobacco and religion, and the effect of tobacco on the environment and on economies. The role of health professionals, the UN and governments, in tobacco control also comes under scrutiny.

As well as emphasizing developing countries the conference will focus on women and smoking. Professor Judith Mackay, Director of the Asian Consultancy on Tobacco Control, one of two vice-chairmen of the conference's scientific committee, said: "One of the greatest preventative public health needs in the world today is to stop a rise in smoking among women, especially in developing countries where few women smoke as yet.

There is still a real chance to turn the tide in this area."

The conference is being organized by the Chinese Association on Smoking and Health and the Chinese Medical Association under the auspices of several international bodies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Union Against Cancer (UICC - http://www.uicc.org ) and the American Cancer Society. The co- organizers and sponsors are Bionax, the Australian and Hong Kong- based healthcare company.

The opening ceremony is in the Great Hall of the People in the presence of China's President, Mr Jiang Zemin.

Secretary-General of the conference, Professor Lu Rushan, said: "This meeting will allow knowledgeable people with specific expertise to share their experience and develop a global strategy for reducing deaths from tobacco."

Professor Richard Peto of Oxford University, England, joint scientific committee vice-chairman, who will present some of the new data on global smoking prevalence and deaths, said: " Worldwide, the only two causes of death that are big and getting bigger fast, are HIV and tobacco."
