Another Reason to Ban Smoking on Beaches [07/23-5]

Smoking is already prohibited on a number of beaches for the comfort, convenience, and protection of nonsmoking bathers, to protect wildlife, and for other reasons, including the reduction in litter.

Here, from Yahoo, is strong support for the latter reason. Why not ask to have smoking banned on your favorite beaches today!

The California Coastal Commission claims cigarette butts are the most common kind of trash found on the state's beaches.

During a 1997 coastal clean-up, more than 49-thousand volunteers canvassed California's beaches and removed a record 706-thousand pounds of trash.

That included 237-thousand cigarette butts, 59-thousand food wrappers and 64-thousand pieces of plastic.
