Excerpts from A new fix for addiction
By MATT MARION, Men's Health [04/01/99]
Men struggling to give up cigarettes, alcohol, or even cocaine may soon have a valuable new weapon to use in their fight. An epilepsy drug could be the key to stopping any addiction. Gamma vinyl-GABA (GVG) works by increasing the amount of a neurotransmitter that reduces the buildup of dopamine--a brain chemical that is elevated by drugs such as cocaine and nicotine. Animals addicted to nicotine and cocaine completely avoided these drugs after they were given GVG. GVG is currently awaiting FDA approval.
