Utah had the lowest percentage of smokers of any state in the
country in 1998, while Kentucky had the highest, federal health experts said Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 14.2 percent of adults in Utah
smoked regularly last year, compared with 30.8 percent in tobacco-producing Kentucky.

Five states have smoking rates below 20 percent, said Michael Eriksen, director of the
CDC's Office on Smoking and Health. Those are Utah, Minnesota, California, New Jersey
 and Hawaii.

The national average was 22.9 percent, with 25.3 percent of men and 21 percent of women
in the 50 states and the District of Columbia reporting in a telephone survey that they
smoked every day or some days, the CDC said.
